Michael Hough’s September Illawarra Register Report
Hi to each of our readers. I am pleased to report that the Illawarra Register has started well and has now successfully conducted two more well-supported and interesting events. They were:
CHRISTMAS IN JULY- LUNCH AT MT KEIRA SCOUT CAMP – SUNDAY 23RD JULY AT 12 NOON
We has a great social event combined with the Jag Club (Illawarra) the South Coast Veteran and Vintage Car Club and the Scouting community to enjoy a lovely lunch in front of a roaring fire at the Mt Keira Scout Camp.
And
THE THURSDAY MORNING SOCIAL RUN- THURSDAY 27th JULY 2017 COMMENCING 1000 HRS
The combined MG Car Club and Jaguar Drivers Club (Illawarra) groups went to the Wollongong Science Centre, Squires Way Fairy Meadow, on THURSDAY THE 27TH OF JULY 2017.
This month’s report is in two parts- with the Xmas In July report first and written by me, followed by the Science Centre run report- which was written by Stephen and Michelle Page, as I was unable to attend that Thursday morning due to a work-related commitment
So, here we go!
Christmas In July at Mt Keira Scout Camp
I hope that you will enjoy the photos attached to this report, as they reveal both a fascinating venue as well as an excellent attendance –approx. 12 persons from the MG Car Club of Sydney, about 16 members from the Jag Club (Illawarra Register) and about 30 from the South Coast Veteran and Vintage car Club.
The photos of cars lined up on the Scout Camp camping flat show they were a very wide range of classic and historic vehicles.
If you have not been to the beautiful and historic Mt Keira Scout Camp I urge you to take the opportunity to get there. Check out their website here.
The Scouts encourage appropriate public usage, and the facilities are available for hire for social functions and weddings, for example. (Bias Disclaimer – I am an ex Mt Keira Scout Camp Chairman, and my daughter was married at the Scout Camp- using ‘The Glen’ for the wedding ceremony and the lodge for the reception.)
We were all met on arrival and scout camp staff guided us to be ‘special parked’- so that the car clubs’ distinctive cars could be displayed separately. There was a line-up of about 35 distinctive and attractive cars mixed nicely in order of arrival, which presented a great sight on the scout camp camping flat.
The actual lunch was in the historic scout camp lodge, and the classic wooden panelling and stone fireplace offered by this venue was a great setting for a Christmas in July!
We were also entertained on arrival by a scout duo from the bi-annual Gang Show Revue. It was a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere which encouraged everyone to relax and enjoy the event!
The food was good quality, and in (usual for scouts catering quantity) oversupply. The Scout Camp Chairman had organised a raffle with good prizes, a surprise gift for a lucky place setting holder, and some very amusing pen and paper games with a Christmas theme, which brought forth much laughter from everyone.
In summary, we ate well and relaxed well in the terrific atmosphere of the historic scout camp and all I can say to those who considered coming but decided not to – BAD Call GUYS! Make sure you come next Year!
Enjoy the photos
Michael
Thursday 28th of July Run to the University of Wollongong Science Centre
Report and Photos by Stephen and Michelle Page
It was a bright sunny morning for our third MGCC Illawarra Register Run. There was a good roll up of 6 MGs joining the Jaguars for our visit to Wollongong Science Centre.
Our group enjoyed a chat and morning tea together before being ushered into the educational science show where we learned all about liquid nitrogen at a very cold minus 196 degrees Celsius. The extreme cold had balloons exploding, balloons shrinking, creating condensation at room temperature, shrinking metal and stopping a rubber ball from bouncing.
After the science demonstrations, we all had a play with the many interactive exhibits which demonstrated science, engineering and technology in action. There were also exhibits on dinosaurs, fossils, illusions, motors and electricity.
The planetarium show was very interesting. We watched day turn into night and our knowledgeable guide pointed out different stars and constellations. There was also an excellent short film on the history of the space race between America and Russia as well as achievements of space travel with man landing on the moon.
After a quick wander through the science shop, we all meandered out to the car park and some headed off while others continued to chat. Overall a great morning and many thanks goes to Ron Critcher from the Jaguar Drivers Club (Illawarra) for organising the event as well as Michael Hough for his continued efforts with the Illawarra Register.
Our next MGCC Illawarra Register Run is in September to Minnamurra Rainforest, so we look forward to seeing you and your MG there.

The Final Word
I hope you have enjoyed these two reports, and I would like to thank those MG Car Club members who turned out to support any of our MG Car Club activities, and in particular ‘our’ Illawarra register events.

The next Illawarra Register run will be on Thursday the 28th SEPTEMBER 2017. It will be at the Minamurra Rainforest Budderoo National Park Minamurra Falls Road Minamurra NSW 2533 (near Jamberoo).
It will commence at 9:30 am with a walk along the boardwalk to the falls. Morning tea will be at 11:00 am (as the kiosk doesn’t open until then).

Please advise Michael Hough of your attendance on 0418 424748 or [email protected] by Monday the 25th of September.
The final Illawarra Register event of 2017 will be a combined run to the spectacular escarpment lookouts above the Illawarra, followed by lunch at Panorama House on Thursday the 30th of November, 2017.
The Illawarra Register social runs have proved popular, and we have been asked to continue the idea of one every two months at present. So, here is the FINAL 2017 Illawarra register run (in outline only details like food costs to follow):
*10.00:- MEET AT SUBLIME POINT LOOKOUT FOR MORNING TEA AND SHOWING OFF CARS (and enjoy the great views!)
*SHORT DISTANCE CONVOY DOWN TO BULLI LOOKOUT AND THE CLIFFHANGAR CAFÉ (and enjoy the different great views!)
*SHORT DISTANCE CONVOY BACK TO PANORAMA HOUSE AND OPTIONAL STAY FOR LUNCH (and continue to enjoy the nearly different great views!)
It won’t be long until we start planning for 2018, so if you have any suggestions for any great venues for an enjoyable social run in the Illawarra/ Shoalhaven/ Southern Highlands region, please contact me. Thank you!
Enjoy your Classic Motoring,
Michael Hough
